Kachi’s Castle

As a way of learning Famitracker in 2021 I thought it would be cool to do a concept album of NES/Famicom tracks in 5/4 with a vague story about a lost cartridge and the developers’ superstition to the number 4 and hence aversion to the time signature 4/4.

…Yeah, it was kind of silly. Still, I did end up with two tracks in Famitracker, producing authentic .NSF files that are available upon request.

A Dry and Peaceful Day

This was intended to be an intro tune for an opening cutscene or something. The melody in this one is fine, I reckon (I actually figured it out on keyboard as a sort of 5/4 minuet first), but listening to it now the mix is awful, probably because I mixed it on my laptop speakers like a nonce. Will I ever fix it? lol no

Kiln Ridge

While still in 5/4, the vibe with this one is very different (the danger! the tension!) and almost feels like it should be from a different game, even if it is supposed to be the soundtrack for a different area (“Kiln Ridge”). However I am quite happy with the track when considered on its own. The delayed, over-the-top vibrato effect is one I’ve adored ever since I heard the Tower of Heaven soundtrack, which if you’ve read through my chiptune recs you’ll know all about, I’m sure.
